The Reformers We Ride: Why Oak Cliff Pilates Runs STOTT PILATES® on Merrithew® Equipment
·
1 min read
Most studios don't tell you what you're strapping into. You show up, you get on a machine, you leave sore. Cool.
We're not most studios.
Oak Cliff Pilates is the only Pilates studio in Dallas running 250+ classes a week across three locations (Bishop Arts, Uptown, and Lower Greenville) exclusively on STOTT PILATES® Merrithew® SPX® Max Reformers and the V2 Max™ series. That's not a spec sheet flex. That's a decision we made on purpose, and it shapes every class you take with us.
Here's the whole story.
Where STOTT PILATES® Came From
Joseph Pilates built the original method in the early 20th century: 34 exercises, a handful of spring-loaded contraptions, and a philosophy about breath and control that was decades ahead of the fitness industry.
Fast forward. In 1988, Lindsay and Moira Merrithew founded what would become Merrithew, in Toronto. Moira was a former professional dancer, and she came to Pilates the way a lot of people do: through injury. She studied under first-generation teachers trained in Joseph Pilates' lineage. Then she did something the purist camp found borderline heretical.
She updated it.
STOTT PILATES® became the contemporary interpretation of the method. The original repertoire, re-engineered around modern exercise science, spinal biomechanics, and rehabilitation research. Where classical Pilates preserves the work exactly as it was taught, STOTT PILATES refines it. It adds preparatory and modified exercises, builds out real progressions, and codifies the whole thing around Five Basic Principles:
Breathing
Pelvic placement
Rib cage placement
Scapular movement and stabilization
Head and cervical placement
That's the framework. It's why a STOTT-informed class doesn't just tell you to "engage your core." It tells you what to engage, when, and why. It's also why the method translates cleanly across a room where one person is nine months postpartum, one is rehabbing an ACL, and one plays competitive rec-league basketball and thinks Pilates is going to be easy.
Over the following decades Merrithew grew into a global education and equipment company, training instructors in 135 countries and building the machines to match.
The Equipment: SPX® Max and V2 Max™ Reformers
A reformer is a carriage on rails loaded with springs. Simple concept. The difference between a good one and a great one is in the details you feel forty minutes in.
The SPX® Max Reformer
The SPX Max is the workhorse. What sets it apart:
Vertical frame extension. This is the big one. Add the Max attachments and a reformer becomes a reformer plus tower. That opens up standing springwork, push-through-bar patterns, and roll-down bar work a flat reformer simply can't offer. More exercise vocabulary, more progressions, more ways to work around an injury instead of skipping a class.
Adjustable footbar with multiple locking positions, so a 5'2" client and a 6'4" client get the same quality of setup instead of one of them making do.
Precision gear bar and spring calibration for consistent, repeatable resistance. When your trainer says "one red, one blue," that means the same thing at every one of our studios.
Built to be used. Commercial-grade construction, high-density upholstery, and hardware rated for the volume a studio running 250+ weekly classes actually puts on a machine.
The V2 Max™ Series
The V2 Max takes the vertical frame further, with adjustable pulley risers integrated into the tower. Translation: the line of pull can be repositioned to match the exercise and the body doing it. You get Cadillac-style spring work, three-dimensional resistance patterns, and a genuinely enormous exercise library on a footprint that fits in a real studio.
This is the machine that lets an advanced class stay advanced and a beginner class stay accessible. Same equipment, different setup. And at the top of the V2 Max line sits the V2 Max Plus™, which is where our private program lives.
The Private Room: V2 Max Plus™ All-in-One Cadillac Reformers
Group class is the culture. But some work only happens one-on-one.
We run two V2 Max Plus™ High-Precision all-in-one Cadillac Reformers in a dedicated private space at Lower Greenville, plus one at Uptown. These are the top of the Merrithew line: extended, taller vertical frames, high-precision construction, and the full Cadillac repertoire built into a reformer chassis.
If you've only ever seen a standard reformer, this thing looks like it belongs in a clinic or a pro training facility. That's because it does. A Cadillac (the classical name is the trapeze table) combines the reformer carriage with a full overhead frame: push-through bar, roll-down bar, leg and arm springs anchored at multiple heights, trapeze, and fuzzy loops. It is the most versatile apparatus in the entire Pilates system, and there is almost nothing in the repertoire it can't do.
Why the taller frame matters: height is range. A longer, taller vertical frame means more overhead clearance, longer spring lines, and steeper angles of pull. That means full extension work, hanging and decompression patterns, and standing springwork that a standard frame physically cuts short. If you're 6'2" with a wingspan, a standard reformer tower is a compromise. This isn't.
That's exactly why it works for two groups at opposite ends of the spectrum.
Professional and collegiate athletes. Rotational power, single-leg stability, thoracic mobility, and eccentric control, on an apparatus that can load a big body through a full range without running out of frame. Cross-training that complements a strength program instead of competing with it.
Anyone serious about expanding their practice. Plateaued in group class? This is the next room. The full Cadillac repertoire is a deeper well than any reformer-only program can offer.
And for everyone else, the private room delivers what group class can't:
Spinal work that needs an overhead frame: decompression, supported extension, and hanging patterns, with a trainer spotting.
Injury-specific programming. Post-surgical, postpartum, chronic back and shoulder issues. One joint, one plane, one spring at a time.
Total privacy. Own space, door closed, no mirror wall, nobody waiting on your machine. Some people need that to actually do the work.
Private and Duo-Private Sessions
Two ways in.
Private. Just you and your trainer. Programming built around your body, your history, and whatever you're actually trying to fix or build.
Duo-Private. You and one other person. Split the rate, keep the individual attention. Best thing we offer for couples, training partners, teammates, or a friend you'll only reliably show up for if it's on the calendar together.
Available at Lower Greenville and Uptown. Sessions book up fast, because there are only three of these machines in the whole company.

How We Actually Use Them
Owning good equipment isn't a personality. Programming on it is.
Across three locations, 50+ trainers, and 250+ classes a week, the Merrithew platform is what lets us run:
Full-body flows that use the reformer, the tower, and the springs in one session, not thirty minutes of leg presses.
True level progression. Beginner-friendly and advanced classes on identical machines means you're not learning a whole new apparatus when you level up. You just go harder.
Real modifications. Bad shoulder? Pregnant? Coming back from surgery? The vertical frame and adjustable pulleys give our trainers options instead of apologies.
Private and duo-private training on V2 Max Plus™ Cadillac Reformers at Lower Greenville and Uptown, in a private space where the equipment range really opens up.
Consistency between studios. Take a class in Bishop Arts on Monday and Uptown on Thursday and the machine feels the same. Your Tuesday trainer and your Saturday trainer are speaking the same language.
That last point is underrated. Multi-location studios usually feel like three different businesses. Ours doesn't, and the equipment standard is a big reason why.
Why We Think These Are the Best Reformers on the Market
Fair question. Here's our case.
The equipment and the method were built together. Merrithew makes the machines and writes the curriculum. Nothing is an afterthought. The apparatus exists to serve a specific, documented movement system.
Rehab-grade credibility. STOTT PILATES is used in physical therapy and clinical settings, not just boutique studios. Equipment that holds up to clinical standards holds up to a Saturday 9am with a full house.
Versatility per square foot. The vertical frame turns one machine into several. For a studio, that means deeper programming without a bigger building. For you, it means classes that don't get repetitive.
It lasts. These machines take thousands of hours a year and stay quiet, smooth, and true.
It's a hiring standard. Merrithew-trained instructors learn on this exact equipment. Keep the standard high and you attract trainers who care about the difference.
Are there other excellent reformers? Yes. Balanced Body, Peak, and Gratz are all serious equipment with real followings, and classical purists will make a strong argument for Gratz specifically. We chose Merrithew because the combination of contemporary biomechanics, clinical grounding, and range on a single apparatus fits how we teach and who we teach.
FAQ
What is STOTT PILATES®?
STOTT PILATES is the contemporary interpretation of the Pilates method, developed by Moira and Lindsay Merrithew beginning in 1988. It preserves Joseph Pilates' original repertoire while incorporating modern spinal biomechanics and rehabilitation science, organized around Five Basic Principles.
What's the difference between STOTT PILATES and classical Pilates?
Classical Pilates preserves the original exercises and order as Joseph Pilates taught them. STOTT PILATES adds modified and preparatory exercises, clearer progressions, and updated biomechanical cueing, which makes the method more adaptable across body types, injuries, and experience levels.
What is an SPX® Max Reformer?
A commercial reformer made by Merrithew that accepts a vertical frame extension, turning it into a combination reformer and tower. It expands the available repertoire well beyond a standard flat reformer.
Do you offer private Pilates in Dallas?
Yes. We run private and duo-private sessions on V2 Max Plus™ High-Precision all-in-one Cadillac Reformers. Two sit in a dedicated private space at Lower Greenville and one is at Uptown. Book at [PRIVATE BOOKING URL].
What is a duo-private Pilates session?
You and one other person training together with a single instructor. You split the rate but keep individualized programming. Popular with couples, training partners, and teammates.
What's a Cadillac Reformer, and why does it matter?
It combines a reformer carriage with a full overhead frame: push-through bar, roll-down bar, trapeze, and springs anchored at multiple heights. Our units have extended, taller frames, which means longer spring lines and fuller range of motion. That makes them well suited to taller clients, professional and collegiate athletes, and anyone ready to go deeper than a reformer-only program allows.
Do I need experience to take a reformer class?
No. We program beginner-friendly through advanced classes on the same equipment, and our trainers modify in real time. First-timers should start with the intro offer.
